⚖️ Michigan State Law

Under Michigan law, before lighting any open fire you must check whether a burn permit is in effect for your location. The DNR issues burn permits for counties in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula (including Crawford County).

If "NO" appears in the Burning Permits Issued column, NO open debris burning is allowed for that location at that time.

State law also provides:

Burning grass and leaves is allowed in municipalities with populations under 7,500, unless prohibited by local ordinance.
Burning any yard debris within 1,400 feet of an incorporated city or village limit is prohibited under EGLE air quality rules.
You will be in violation of state law if you burn debris without a permit.
You are responsible for all damages resulting from the escape of fire.
